  1. It’s a tram, and this particular one is free to ride. It travels around the outside of the city centre. It moves slowly but it’s lots of fun and is a good way to see a bit of the city at a less than frenetic pace. The government (governments) have been trying to get rid of these amazing old trams for decades. The people do their best to stop them and this ‘City Circle line’ has kept a few of them in service.

    1. Streetcar in American English, and yes I enjoyed riding them while in Melbourne. Melbourne should pay careful attention to preserving this rich and unique history, which many world cities have dismantled. Thankfully, many American cities are now starting the process of bringing back such transportation choices, albeit slowly.

Thanks for stopping by and adding your two cents and a nice little story about the City Circle Line. Look forward to hearing more from you.

      1. The amazing thing about Melbourne trams is that we owe there existence to one man. He was the head of the MMTB at the time and every other city in Australia was getting rid of their trams. He spent a LOT of time getting himself in the press telling Melbournians how lucky they were to have trams, and more importantly, he spent time talking to policy makers. The trams survived and we get to enjoy them……. I wish I could remember this bloke’s name.
