Chuseok (추석)

Chuseok (추석)

Chuseok, or the Korean harvest festival of thanks is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar.

Traditionally celebrated around the harvest, by joining with family and consuming traditional foods like rice cake, it has, like most things in Korea, morphed into a spending spree, whereby sets of tuna, oil, soap and toothpaste are handed out as obligatory gifts.

Unlike Christmas, which holds a special place in the hearts of westerners no matter where they happen to find themselves, Koreans in Los Angeles seem uninterested in commemorating Chuseok, as there is no money to receive from elders, with their elder family usually still residing in Korea.
