The American Lakes Trail, or sometimes known as Michigan Lakes is a moderate hike beginning from Cameron Pass off Colorado SR 14 up the Poudre Canyon and extends about 5 miles one-way to abut the Continental Divide on the border of RMNP.

The hike begins at the Cameron Pass parking lot and follows an irrigation diversion canal called Michigan Ditch for the first few miles until merging with the trail proper.

The trail itself rises gradually through alternating forest and alpine meadows before breaking clear above the treeline altogether, exposing sweeping vistas of the surrounding meadows and mountains in its 1520 feet gain.

The September day we hiked it, we were blessed with gorgeously clear skies dotted with beautiful, fluffy cumulus clouds, which accentuated the spectacular peaks of the surrounding mountains and added even more to the vistas.
