Driving over Guanella Pass

Guanella Pass

Guanella pass, west of Denver is a scenic, high elevation road in the Rocky mountains of Colorado.  Connecting I-70 to the north to US285 to the south, this alternative route is not a highway, but a curvy, beautiful option for those who prefer to explore rather than zip through the majesty of the Rockies.

Reaching an elevation of 11,669 ft/ 3557 m. at the pass, Guanella pass isn’t one of the highest roads in the state, but being paved, is an easy one and offers stunning vistas and a fun drive.  Besides seeing some of the high country easily, you can also use to mix in the historic town of Georgetown, just off I-70, get in some high-altitude hiking and pitch your tent along the way in one of the free dispersed camping sites along the way.
