Rabbit Mountain Open Space
Rabbit Mountain Open Space near Lyons, Colorado is a great little spot in Boulder County, which is great for some quick hikes or runs. Composed of three short trails: Indian Mesa at 2.2 miles, Eagle Wind at 2.5 miles and Little Thompson Overlook at 1.5 miles,
My favorite trail at Rabbit Mountain Open Space is the Eagle Wind trail, which is a figure nine loop going through a variety of terrain. Starting at the parking lot, you will be among the grasslands that dominate the Front Range area. As you hike up a bit, you will next be in the shrublands, where you’ll encounter flora such as mountain mahogany, skunkbrush and yucca. Finally, as you make the bend in the loop to forests of juniper and ponderosa pine.
Although not as sweeping as nearby Hall or Heil Valley Ranch Open Spaces, Rabbit Mountain Open Space does allow dogs, which is an important consideration for me, since I don’t like to leave my pooch at home while enjoying the outdoors. Another plus is that it isn’t nearly as crowded as the two above mentioned open spaces, which can provide for a much more relaxing hike.
You can get to Rabbit Mountain Open Space off CR66 from Longmont or from Lyons.
