Welcome to my blog! Here, you’ll see the world through my eyes and share my love of travel, the outdoors and photography.

My serious travels began in 2007 when I sold all my belongings and moved to South Korea to work as an English teacher. Since that time, I have had the opportunity to visit many countries, some quickly, but others taking my sweet time. ย Since returning to the US in 2013, I have relocated to Colorado and continue to pursue my hobbies.

I have learned to take travel as life should be taken-slowly and realized that traveling is an art, which takes much practice. There is nothing like wandering all day in a strange place and discovering little alleys, meeting local people or discovering hidden paths. Cheap hostels, camping,ย couch surfingย or invitations into local households-I’ve done them all and have met some of the warmest and most friendly people en route.

After returning to the US in 2012 I lived in Los Angeles for a few years before settling in Colorado in May 2014. Now, I’m exploring all the fantastic hiking and local destinations Colorado and the west has to offer.

  1. Thanks for visiting my blog. Saw your photos from Japan. Great shots! I too enjoy traveling and photography. I just cannot get enough of both! Looking forward to your future posts.

    1. I would love to visit the Philippines, as it is one of the few countries in East or Southeast Asia that I didn’t get the chance to visit while I lived in Korea.

  2. Thank you for stopping by my blog. As a retired educator and newbie blogger, I am looking forward to learning and am open to suggestions. I visited your gallery and especially enjoyed the photos in your Mexico album.

    1. Thank you for stopping by as well! What area of education were you in? I appreciate your words about my photos, I really enjoy snapping and editing them and I have a lot to learn too, as I only started doing this back in November.

      1. Sorry I did not reply sooner. I am still learning my way around WordPress. I just discovered your reply today.
I was a secondary education teacher for 16 years, teaching electronics and computer science. I spent the last 17 years working as a network support specialist for the school district. Now that I am retired, I plan to travel, take pictures, write and generally forget about technology, except for photo tech.

        Thank you for asking.

  3. “Travel is an art which takes much practice”. I couldn’t agree more. You have a great story and outlook. Your blog is well put together and I look forward to reading more. Thank you for following my blog.

  4. Because you are a teacher, and teachers are in my opinion, very important, I shall follow your blog. I love photography and travelling too, and cooking. thanks for following my blog.

        1. Nice, a friend of mine whom I met in Korea, who is from Peachland is moving to Vancouver soon, so I plan to visit and hopefully get out a bit too. I’ll keep visiting your site to see new places. Hope you frequent mine as well-I post daily.

  5. I have nominated you for a Versatile Blogger Award. Congrats! Please see my homepage to find out how to accept the award and pass it onto fellow bloggers.

  6. Have you tried the Farmer’s Market on Fairfax?
Lots of old L.A. Culture there.
Cantor’s makes great Matzo Ball soup~
Philippe’s has the best French Dip in town across from Union Train Station.
You could explore a different country every day and never get bored.
    I love L.A.

    1. Yeah, I’ve been to the Farmer’s Market several times-it has become quite touristy these days, with The Grove Mall just next door, but still has some good food!

I love having Griffith Park just here and head up there to hike about three times a week. I also love the Silver Lake area, which has lots of cool stuff to do.

I’ll have to try Cantor’s and Philippe’s-thanks for the suggestions ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Stumbled through to your happy place via Happy Yuan. Nice to check out a fellow Californian… least at the moment. Trying to make traveling a bigger part of my life. I am from the Central Coast, I try to post pictures of local places among my life rants. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Awesome blog, John. It’s too bad I’ve just come across it now. I’ve done the ESL thing in Latin America but never in Asia. It’s great to hear/see the perspectives from that part of the world. Your pics are awesome as well. Looking forward to more.

    1. Hi Julie! Thanks for your comments and I’m glad you’re enjoying my blog. I’ll have to check your stuff out too! We have 6 weeks and we are leaving LA, so look for some new material coming on board shorty. Let me know if you have any special place in mind you’re wanting to check out and I may be able to squeeze something in.

  14. Hiking, Travel and Photography? I’m sold! Three of my favorite things, I think (well, coffee tops the list). I walked the Camino de Santiago this summer, and it’s more of a really long walk rather than a hike… but from the looks of this blog I think it’s something you could be interested in. Thanks for sharing your great photos, I can’t wait to check out more!

    1. Coffee-yes! The first thing I do EACH morning is stumble to the kitchen to put my coffee on. Yes, I’d love to do some long walks like the Camino de Santiago-that one is on my list!

  15. John, thanks for visiting my blog recently and liking one of my entries. Yours is fantastic and I just subscribed! Keep up the great photos and stories. I love your layout too!

  16. John,

First of all I want to say you have a wonderful blog with very nice photos. I will follow you about hiking because despite now that I stored by suitcase I want to do hiking to alternate with my jogging.

Secondly I thank you for your visit!

    Wish you well.

  17. Breathtaking photography and travel!!! I have a whole list of places waiting for me and I can’t wait to get started. I’ll keep up with all your new adventures. Who knows, I might find more places to add to my list.

  18. Gotta say, this blog is definitely worth the follow โ€“ great job, loving all the beautiful photography and stories! ๐Ÿ™‚
Apart from my blog, Iโ€™ve got a project called Showzee (http://www.showzee.com) that might definitely interest you, take a look and if you fancy it, request an invite and Iโ€™ll fast track you!

    1. Thank you! I’ve really tried to improve and work on it this year compared to last. It takes up a larger portion of my time now, but I love it!

  19. Love your blog John. Reminds me of good old travel days of my youth. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing great stories and pictures. And I agree, best part of travel is when you take it slowly and really get to know the locals and the place. Thanks for sharing.

  20. Hi John, thanks for visiting my blog Born to Travel. Have enjoyed looking around yours. We live on the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne. Well worth a visit when you are in Australia again. Cheers

  21. Like you were when you sold it all and got away,,, that’s where I am now,, it’s scary and I have never been anywhere or seen anything and I have someone I know who will let me come stay in London with her if I can just muster the courage to go,,, I want to spend time in another place, far away from here,,, it’s a long story, I’m tired of being sad about my past, tired of feeling like this has all been a waste,, etc. etc. , as you can tell, I’m a bit low tonight. Anyway, I would love to have someone help me on my quest, I don’t know the first thing about travel, where to stay, how to afford it, how not to get eaten my the locals, how to properly respect other cultures ,, you get my drift. I’m glad you got away, if you are just bored,,๐Ÿ˜‰ you could help me plan my get away,,night night,,,sweet dreams

  22. I love your blog and your story is very inspirational to me. I have been thinking about heading to Thailand to teach English for a year for a while now and it’s encouraging to see that you had such a remarkable experience in your travels there.

I look forward to reading more about your adventures in Colorado. As a fellow hiker located on the East coast, I will be reading with envy as I see the massive, rewarding summits you reach!

    – Brandon

    1. Thanks for stopping by and I’m glad you’re enjoying my blog. I think you should head to Asia to teach and travel-it really is a great opportunity to get to know a place!

  23. I found your blog through the “fresh” photo challenge. I am a want-to-be outdoor enthusiast in the early stages of kayaking and hiking the South Carolina Lowcountry. The Outside television network has become a favorite as I live vicariously through adventure seekers like you! I look forward to your posts about Colorado and other places in the world.

  24. I look forward to following your adventures…I am also (fairly) recently back from being abroad. What a transition! Glad to see you have found a place to live and explore. ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Hi there !

I’m also doing a travel blog on Pinterest. Decided to put one up when I moved to Ireland last summer. I was wondering if you’d be interested in writing a post for my blog and perhaps have me write one for yours. I thought it’d be a great way to get different traveling perspectives, and it’ll also help reach different readers. Give my blog a look (thehereandwow.wordpress.com), and if you’re interested, please send me an e-mail when you can.

Good luck with everything and happy writing,

It’s encouraging to see that you’re still managing to have adventures stateside!
